Research Fellow - Servoy & Cloud Bioinformatician Nottingham Arabidopsis Stock Centre (NASC)



NASC has state-of-the-art Affymetrix Gene-chip facilities and a long established international reputation (since 1991) in germplasm, genomic and transcriptomic services.  This project is a production level application of computing and database skills in a world-leading biological project. This post is an opportunity to develop skills within the fields of bioinformatics and systems biology.


The successful candidate will ensure that our Servoy germplasm catalogue, the underlying SQL database(s) and associated web resources are maintained, renewed, developed, curated and deployed; such that our customers and staff experience a timely, responsible, and business-like informatics infrastructure. Duties will mainly include programming and management of our production databases on local HP hardware, but you will also drive the virtualisation and transfer of our resources to remote services and conversion of our existing infrastructure to a cloud based architecture.


Candidates should have a higher degree or equivalent apprenticeship in bioinformatics or computer sciences. Candidates must be experienced with SQL/Servoy/Java in LINUX/Windows/MacOSX. An ability to take operational responsibility for a heterologous set of hardware/software is absolutely critical as is an aptitude for teamwork and a clear interest in public user-driven database or applications development.


Salary will be within the range £27,428 - £30,870 per annum depending on skills and experience.


This post is available immediately and will be offered on a fixed-term contract until 31 March 2013.
